Texas basketball vs. Houston final score, highlights: Longhorns fall to Cougars in overtime (2024)

Despites a valiant second-half effort, Texas basketball fell to No. 4 Houston 76-72 in overtime on Monday night at home.

The Longhorns (14-7, 3-5 Big 12) fell to the Cougars (19-2, 6-2) at the Moody Center, despite outscoring Houston 40-32 in the second half.

Houston guard Jamal Shead led the way for the Cougars with 25 points on 11 of 24 shooting, along with eight rebounds and four assists. Texas received strong efforts from Max Abmas (20 points), Dillon Mitchell (16 points) and Dylan Disu (14 points) on the night, despite the loss.

Overtime

10:31 p.m.: Sharpe makes both free throws to seat it for Houston. Texas loses 76-72 in overtime.

10:28 p.m.: Abmas misses a 3-pointer on the next possession but gets fouled, earning three free throws. Abmas makes the first two before intentional missing the second, which Houston rebounds. Texas trails 74-72 with Houston set to go to the free-throw line with 0.1 seconds left.

10:26 p.m.: Houston nails both free throws to take a 74-70 lead with under 10 seconds left. That should do it.

10:25 p.m.: Abmas misses the game-tying attempt at the rim and Houston comes down with the rebound. Disu fouls to send the Cougars to free free-throw line.

10:23 p.m.: Game is going back and forth, with Houston taking a two-point lead with just under 30 seconds left. Texas has the ball.

10:22 p.m.: Max Abmas. He hits the midrange shot and gest fouled, converting the and-one. Game is tied at 70.

10:21 p.m.: Wow. Cryer misses the midrange shot and Joseph Tugler gets a huge putback dunk. Houston leads 70-67.

10:20 p.m.: Disu gets fouled and nails both foul shots. Texas trails 68-67.

10:18 p.m.: Abmas fouls Cryer, who hits two free throws to give the Cougars a 68-65 lead in overtime. Texas offense getting nothing going in the extra period.

10:15 p.m.: Houston makes a free throw to take a 66-65 lead.

Second half

10:10 p.m.: Abmas missed the halfcourt shot and this game is headed to overtime. Longhorns and Cougars tied at 65 heading into the extra period.

10:06 p.m.: Shead attempts a go-ahead 3-pointer with just over a second left, but he airballs the shot. Texas has a chance to win it here or go to overtime.

10:01 p.m.: Tough sequence for Texas, as Weaver fouls Shead as he shoots for an and-one opportunity. Shead then missed the free throw, but Houston gets the rebound before Weaver fouls again. Houston gets four points on the play to tie the game at 63.

9:59 p.m.: Chendall Weaver forces a steal and gets fouled. Weaver then hits both of his free throws, giving Texas a 63-59 lead.

9:55 p.m.: Texas takes the lead on a layup by Dillon Mitchell. Longhorns lead 61-59 with just over two minutes left.

9:49 p.m.: Texas and Houston trade a few scores, and Houston leads 59-58 with under four minutes left. Should be a fun last couple minutes.

9:44 p.m.: Just like that, Houston is back in the lead. Shead hits another 3-pointer before Emanuel Sharp hits another. Cougars lead 57-54 with under seven minutes remaining.

9:42 p.m.: Houston hits back after the timeout, as Shead continues his strong game with a 3-pointer. Shead up to 18 points now.

9:38 p.m.: Disu hits a huge 3-pointer, causing Houston to call a timeout. Texas up 54-48 now and on a 12-2 run.

9:37 p.m.: Texas on a 9-2 run after Abmas finds Weaver for a layup, giving the Longhorns a 51-48 lead.

9:33 p.m.: Mitchell is taking over. He makes another layup, giving Texas a 48-46 lead.

9:31 p.m.: Mitchell misses the free throw but grabs his own miss before hitting another layup. Game is tied at 46.

9:30 p.m.: And-one. Dillon Mitchell converts a tough layup finish and goes to the free-throw line with Texas down 46-44.

9:28 p.m.: Texas showing life has lit up the Moody Center:

9:26 p.m.: Texas has been the better team through half of the second period. Abmas hits the 2-point jumper to make the deficit just two points. Houston leads 44-42.

9:22 p.m.: Right after the under-16 timeout, Tyrese Hunter nails a 3-pointer to make the score 43-40. Big shot.

9:13 p.m.: Tyrese Hunter picks up the steal and finds Disu for a layup. Longhorns making this a game, as they're down just 41-37 now.

9:11 p.m.: Texas needed that. Abmas hits a 3-pointer before a Mitchell dunk. Texas reduces Houston's lead to 41-35.

9:09 p.m.: Houston cashes in another 3-pointer from L.J. Cryer. Cougars coming out of the half hot.

8:42 p.m.: Disu nearly threw down a huge putback dunk but misses the attempt. Texas with a pair of missed dunks this half.

8:41 p.m.: Big shot by Ithiel Horton, who cuts Houston's lead to nine points after the 3-pointer.

8:39 p.m.: Houston has scored on six straight possessions now, giving the Cougars a 27-16 lead with under five minutes left in the half.

8:34 p.m.: At the under-8 timeout, Texas trails Houston 18-12. Longhorns a mere 5 of 19 shooting.
